The Southeastern Oklahoma State University history professor commands a far better understanding of the issues than does Sulphur Springs tax lawyer VaLinda Hathcox.
The 42-year-old is certainly conversant about the challenges Texas families face. For example, he wants any qualified doctor to be on the list of providers that insurance plans offer. That would help families gain access to more doctors, a particular problem in small-town Texas.

Melançon believes the position of Democrats and Republicans are fundamentally different.
“They want to give to the top and let it trickle down. We want to build the foundation on working-class Americans,” he said.
He calls recent state and national tax cuts gimmicks.
“The state Republicans cut property taxes but now the school district will have rollback elections,” said Melançon, who believes state leaders shifted the need for tax increases to the local schools.
He also believes renewable energy should take a front seat in Washington to create jobs and alleviate America’s dependence on Middle East oil.
